HOW KEEPING A TIDY WARDROBE CAN HELP YOU REALISE YOUR STYLE
Style: 'It's an unconscious, unspoken language that we direct at other people' (Isabelle Thomas & Frederique Veysset)*
Style isn't a question of age or money, more of a state of mind. And that state of mind can get very jumbled if your wardrobe is not in order. Forget what clothes you have? I do this all the time, but you wouldn't if like me you're starting to organise your room and wardrobe. Where to start, I hear you asking? With these simple 3 questions:
WHAT DO I THROW AWAY?
The obvious: clothes that no longer fit.... just because something fit you and you liked it when you was fourteen, doesn't mean it needs to be keeping precious space in your wardrobe. Keep the photos/memories and not the item (unless it holds a great degree of sentimentality, I guess i'll let you off).
- Throw out any jeans that sit unflatteringly on your hip, whilst you may lose a few pounds, if the shape isn't right for you, it will never be no matter what your size. Old t-shirts, shirts, skirts. If they do nothing for you, don't bother keeping them! Charity shops often do collections, so if like me you don't like the thought of throwing them away completely, you can always give them away, they might make a happy home somewhere that isn't necessarily in YOUR wardrobe.
The Harder part: Those clothes that you love but tend to avoid because they have begun to look tatty. Unless they are real leather and can pull off the worn look, these threadbare, worn-out clothes have great potential of making you look tatty and are therefore pointless to hold on to.
- Throw away any items that are freyed at the collar, elbows, discoloured, got holes in, or have a substantial amount of thread-pulls. Whilst there are some items that if you have the patience or the money to get repaired can be worth holding onto, most aren't, and you should therefore be wise.
Finally, any clothes that are soulless or look cheap, including accessories and bags. Get rid of any clothes that you brought for the sake of them being £5 and haven't worn. Just because something was a bargain doesn't always mean it's good. Those shoddy seams, badly cut lines and frumpy clothes aren't going to make a difference to your life once their gone, so get rid!
WHAT TO KEEP?
Basic items of good quality. Things that are cashmere, real leather, 100% cotton or generally well-made will always come in handy. That striped tee will no doubt make multitudes of reappearances. These kinds of items are good to have in your wardrobe for days when you want a comfier, easier style, and also for days when a simple look is needed.
Anything with a name. Designer clothes tend not to go out of fashion, even if you only wear them occasionally designer items tend to always go with other basic items and their look tends to cycle back into fashion if you hang on in there. Failing this, and it's an item you can never ever in a million years see yourself wearing, or ever want to, i.e. it just isn't your thing, SELL SELL SELL. Designer items, especially vintage ones always rack up lots on eBay.
Pieces that made you feel confident. Unless these have shoulder pads that would make the 80s embarrassed it's likely you'll find a time to revisit that old silk dress, or those patterned trousers. Having an eclectic mix of clothes you loved yourself in, in your wardrobe means that when you buy future pieces, they can always be mixed and matched.
ORGANISE, ORGANISE, ORGANISE!
There are many strategies to successfully organising your wardrobe once you've decided what to keep and what to throw. Been as I have a small wardrobe I tend to remove my winter clothes in summer, fold and pack them up and store them in the loft. But if you have a huge wardrobe (you lucky thing!), there's no need for this, just organise it appropriately, placing seasons together. For example, jumpers at once end and summer skirts the other.
Within these seasons, I like to order in terms of item. By this I mean, all my skirts together, dresses together etc. This also minimises space because you can put more than one skirt on a hanger without it getting lost, theres no need to rummage because you know it'll be within the section that contains skirts.
This makes for an easier time when getting ready.
One tip is also to take photos of those special outfits that you always feel extra good in. Be it the white summer dress you wear over and over or a more occasional piece. This will act as a reminder of what you have on those days where you think you have nothing. I tend to scroll through my past instagram pictures to see this, but not everyone likes putting pictures of themselves on social media, so taking photos solely for your own benefit can be just as handy.
