Black Mani Takeover: How To

Welcome to my first 'How To' nail post, so here goes...

My favourite manicure look at the moment has to be the simple, yet always classic plain black. This is my favourite as it is SO easy to paint neatly, it highlights the perfectly shaped points of your nails and when added with a topcoat, becomes ultra glossy!!

Here is a picture of my nails at the moment and what I used to get them to look this way.

Step One: Wipe over your nails with nail varnish remover on a small cotton bud even if you have no prior nail varnish on, just to make sure they are clean. (I wash my hands after this as I prefer not to have them taste like remover but this step is just personal preference- make sure you dry them well if you do this!)

Step Two: Possibly THE most important step! SHAPING!! I like my nails to be shaped squarely, and have found the best technique to achieve this look is to place your hand on the edge of a table, hold the nail file straight in front of the nail in line with the edge of the table and file (in one direction) till your nail looks straight. You might wish to carefully round the edges of the nails to get a better, neater look.

Ms Manicure Nail File:

Possibly the best nail file i've ever owned!!!
Metal and pointed at the end...
The end also comes in handy for scraping off little bits of
varnish that have gone on your cuticle or skin.

Step Three: The Painting- ALWAYS apply a base coat. Not only does this help against chipping but it is a saviour to nails. I paint my nails constantly and using a base coat is what has prevented them becoming yellow. Then....Choose your colour (for me, black) and paint as neatly as you can the first layer, paying close attention to the ends of the nails, making sure you keep to the shape you have just filed. Your base coat and top coat do not to be overly neat as these are both clear varnishes. However, it is crucial to take your time over the coloured varnish- your nails will thank you in the end! (You will also become much more able to paint neatly and quickly as time goes on.
Paint in this order :)
1. Sally Hansen: Hard as Nails
2. Barry M: 47 Black
3: Nails Inc: Kensington Caviar Gel Effect Plumping Top Coat

Step Four: Wait a minute or so for this layer to set. Paint a second layer on top of this to intensify the colour. With the black I used, the second coat was necessary to get a jet black effect; however it may not be necessary for bolder coloured varnish or thicker varnish to apply this additional coat.

Step Five: Wait AT LEAST 10 minutes for this to dry. Whilst it may feel touch dry, it doesn't mean your nails aren't prone to smudging still! So waiting is key to not messing it up. For this reason, I like to do my nails at night when I am able to sit and watch TV without moving whilst they are drying. Finally, you can add the Caviar Gel Effect to the top. With this top coat I like to add one layer, wait 5 minutes, then finish it off with a final layer just to get that plumped up, smooth shine.

I've found that with painting carefully and using these amount of layers, depending on what you do day-to-day your nails should last up to 5 days without chipping.

Whilst I haven't said anything new about nail painting, it is true that taking care and painting neatly and multiple times is what makes your nails look as if they have been done professionally. If you aren't a neat painter, simply soak a cotton ear bud (or Q-Tip) in nail varnish remover and wipe away the excess varnish on the skin and around the cuticles.

The end result!
